Simple Productivity Task Of The Day: Take A Lap

by Randy Murray on June 10, 2010

Here’s something easy and fast that you can do that will help you restore your productivity: take a lap around your office/home/building.

If you’re overwhelmed, frustrated, or uncertain about what to do next, you need a bit of perspective. One way of gaining that is getting away from the work. Just the act of getting away from your desk or the work you’re doing and MOVING can help calm you and help you let your mind disengage.

Just take five minutes. Trust me, you can take five minutes. Especially if you’re stuck and spinning your wheels. Those five minutes away might just help you get a new idea and a fresh angle and get you moving on your work again.

The critical part of this task is to move. This is not a break to surf or tweet. This is a break for your body as well as you mind. Get up, walk or move to the best of your ability. Leave the vicinity. Get out of your head and back into your body. See what the weather is like.

Then come back and get into it again. I’m betting you’ll find new energy to tackle your work. If you don’t, put the work aside and take a longer break. Why sit there, wasting time, if you’re not going to accomplish anything?

You heard me. Coach Randy says take a lap. Now.

Then come back here and leave a comment.
