Writing Assignment: Keep The Page Blank

by Randy Murray on June 15, 2012

Do you fear the blank page? It’s time to confront that fear.

  • What should I write about? It doesn’t matter.
  • Will it be any good? It doesn’t matter.
  • Will anyone read it? It doesn’t matter.

All that matters is the blank page and your desire to write. If you really want to write, the blank page will offer you hope, not fear.

To test this, start with a blank piece of paper.

For today’s writing assignment take an actual piece of paper and a pencil or pen. Find somewhere quiet and place the paper in front of you and your writing instrument to the side. Now sit and observe the blank page for a full five minutes. Set a timer if it helps, but spend the full time. Writing nothing. Do nothing but observe the page.

At the end of the five minutes you can make one of two choices: write nothing, walk away, or pick up your pen and write.
