1001 Conversations About The Weather

She looked up from the counter and smiled brightly at me as I came through the door.

“Got any warmer out?” she said.

I frowned as I walked past her, shaking my head.

“No. I think it’s actually cooler.”

The hot tub chemical I came in for wasn’t far from the counter and I kept talking as I bent to pick up a container.

“Heard it might frost tonight.”

“You’re kidding,” she said with clear exasperation.

$17.99. Expensive stuff. I looked on the opposite shelf and found a bottle of filter cleaner and picked up a spray bottle of it. I brought both to the checkout, not more than three steps away.

“Well, don’t they say that May 15th is the frost line or what ever they call it.”

“Yeah,” she said, “don’t plant your flowers before then.”

She looked me up in their system and totaled my purchase.

“Must be spa season.”

“It’s always spa season,” I told her and paid.

“My husband had to scrape the frost off the windshield the other day. We live up in Sunbury and you could see it on the lawns, but the closer we got into town you could see you didn’t have any here.”

“Probably will tomorrow,” I said with my hand on the door. “Don’t think it will hurt much anything.”

“Nope,” she said, grinning down at something she was working at on the counter

I pushed open the door. “Have a great day,” I called to her.

“You too.”
