Write What You’re Assigned

by Randy Murray on July 1, 2014

It’s really very simple. If you struggle with writing all you have to do is to write what you’re told to write. Label yourself a student. Accept the title. Say it with me, “I am a writing student.”

And then, as a student, accept assignments and lessons and complete each in a timely manner.

I myself am a writing student. I’ve been a professional writer for almost 30 years and yet I remain a student. I have much to learn. And most of my day I do not have to look for things to write. I’m given assignments.

Yes, most of these assignments come from people who pay me to write them, but still, they are assignments and I have something to learn from completing every one of them.

Don’t concern yourself with the payment part for now. Just accept that you are a student and don’t worry about what you’ll write. Accept an assignment. Or create your own assignment. Complete it on time. Then accept another. Eventually you’ll find that your own writing takes up too much time to accept any assignments for the moment.

Until then, write what you’re assigned to write.
