Writing Assignment: Write A Postcard

by Randy Murray on June 3, 2011

We’re having fun — wish you were here!

You’ve probably received these, probably written them. But postcards can be more. In its best sense, a postcard isn’t a brag about “look where I am.” It’s a brief note to say, “I am thinking about you.”

A postcard is a pause in a journey, a brief moment to select the right card, to write a short message, address it, and find a way to send it. And the recipient knows this, they’ve done it too. The simple fact that I received a card is special in and of itself.

But they can be even more. The message can be more personal, a bigger demonstration that you were thinking about them. It doesn’t have to be long (it can’t be, in the space available), but it can be special.

For today’s assignment, write a postcard to someone from your trip to (select your destination). And no matter which words you select, make sure that the message reads “I am thinking of you.”

Here is my example:

We walked all up and down Portobello St. today. It looks just like this postcard picture. It was fun, a bit like being in a movies. I’ve bought you a little something I found in one of the stalls that I think you’ll get a kick out of it. Tomorrow we have theater tickets. How I wish you could join us.

Don’t forget to feed the fish!

Randy

Dearest Darling Grand Daughter,

Grandma and Grandpa have flown far away on a big airplane for a well-deserved vacation to the beautiful Hawaiian island of Kauai. Before you were born we spent three weeks here and promised to return. The next time we come back we hope to take you with us. You’ll love playing on the beach, swimming with the sea turtles, and watching the whales flip their tails in the air.

The ocean is so blue and the sunset puts rainbows in the sky. We see your smile everywhere and send all our love,

G&G

Lovely.

This note is sent from Bath, England, one of the true wonders of the world. Over the last three days we’ve explored places where people have lived and played for over 2,000 years. I feel like I could move right in.

But there is home, friends, and work, so soon enough I return. But this place is one you should see and spend time in. Come along next time.

That’s all for now. Off to the pub.
